A Taste of Amarante, Portugal

This is a special opportunity for gourmets and wine lovers who wish to discover the gastronomic delights of historic from the historic town of Amarante, Portugal and its surrounding region. Amarante, first settled in the 4th century BC, is situated in the rich northern agricultural lands of the Minho region and is the perfect place to discover the “real Portugal”. You will switch off the stress in Amarante and relax in your superior quality bedroom at the 5-star Casa da Calçada hotel, the hotel, originally built in the 16th century to be one of the main palaces of the Count of Redondo, is today a member of the Relais & Chateaux group of luxury hotels.

The highlight of the Amarante trip is the “Rota Das Estrelas” banquet that you will enjoy as a guest of the hotel’s Michelin star Largo do Paço restaurant.

The Rota das Estrelas is a famed event in Portugal organised to celebrate the very finest of Portuguese cuisine and culinary talent. The dinner will be prepared for you by eight chefs who each have Michelin Stars (14 stars shared between them). The chefs are led by Victor Matos from the hotel’s own Largo do Paço. A full wine service featuring the very best of Portuguese wines will accompany the meal.

Amarante is located close by the Douro River valley (a World Heritage site). The region is where the heralded brand names such as Graham, Taylor, Croft, Dow and Sandeman (among others) have their vast Quintas for growing grapes.

The trip includes a river boat trip up the Douro as well as a visit to one of the well-known “Quintas” for a tasting. Also included will be a guided city tour of Porto (walking and private coach) a guided tour of the Grahams’ Port Cellar in Porto and a tapas lunch.

Chef Vitor Matos profile

Executive Head Chef Vitor MatosCasa da Calçada Executive Head Chef Vitor Matos has developed his culinary skills in Portugal and Switzerland, where he lived several years. Named Chef of the celebrated Largo do Paço in May 2010, Matos is credited with helping the restaurant retain the Michelin star that was awarded in 2004. His career has included spells at Tiara Park Atlantic Hotel, Quinta do Tassel, Vidago Palace Hotel Golf & Spa, Grande Hotel das Caldas da Felgueira, Grande Hotel da Curia Inn and Quinta do Paço. The kitchen of Chef Vítor Matos has Mediterranean influences and presents itself as a mix between traditional and new culinary trends.
